Linux computers measure time since the "epoch", which started midnight January 1, 1970.

Today, at 30 seconds past 6:31pm EST, Unix/POSIX time will measure 1234567890 seconds since the epoch !

So put on your propeller party hats folks. :)

Perhaps this is actually the end of the world. After all this makes just as much sense as any of the other random dates people worry about.

Yes, it is thanks to POSIX time that I have spent a career writing code that includes frequent use of division by 86400....
