Saw a mature rattlesnake while out hiking today... Luckily I saw it while it was a ways up the path, instead of stepping on it!

It made me glad to have a telephoto lens. Having to sneak up close to it with a macro would have really sucked. :)

Sorry if this story is awful for some to read:

My sister had a 5 foot rattlesnake in her garden a few weeks ago. They killed it for safety reasons. I told her that I wished I was there when it happened so I could get some pictures of it before they chopped it in half. They felt very guilty taking the snake's life, but that's way too dangerous. It was probably living under their porch. They chopped off the rattle, though, and I got a picture of the rattle when I went to visit a week ago.

I can't wait to see your pictures.

I love running into snakes in the wild. It's taken me years to convince my Mom to quit killing them, though finally she's not hacking them to pieces at first sight. I'd vastly rather have snakes around (including venomous) than disease carrying rodents.
