These first two photographs were from a roll of film I shot with my old Pentax K-1000, about four years ago. I got the film developed last week. That particular day I was feeling melancholy and had made the journey over route 58, through Konnarock, to visit Whitetop Mountain. As I drove higher, the road ahead disappeared into a deep and silent mist, and I could barely see the road. I exited the car intending to continue on foot, only to find myself in a waking dream that consumed me for hours. It was very bright, yet impossible to see. I walked slowly, turning, watching the landscape fade in and out of reality. Objects only fifteen feet away became soft and indistinct, the mist swallowing my footfalls and memory before they could imprint on the dream. A random wind battered the summit, sending spiraling tunnels of mist racing up pathways, and over and over again I was swallowed by this translucent serpent. Noiseless waves of cloud would surge up from a cliff face straight into the air, roll over like the finest Hawaiian surf wave, and crash towards me across the flats, buring me in the afterwash. It was incredible.

I took these two today, on a trip to Roan Mountain. This is an old mine shaft, now filled with water. The first shot is standing in the mouth of the shaft looking out, the second is a view of the approach to the shaft. It's sealed off, just a small pool inside, so they let visitors go in. Still, having recently read this: http://www.holyshiite.com/caver/ , it was more "interesting" than it would have been otherwise.

on 2004-06-28 02:33 am (UTC)Finding an undeveloped film from years back must be the best thing.
And these, especially the first two, are pure magic.
I've been lacking inspiration lately :(
