Candle sparkle

Long time no posts. I've been kind of laying low. I've been having a nasty bout of depression, and it's been busy at work. It feels like forever since I posted any photos, and surely longer since I've posted any kind of meaningful update about myself. I guess the photos are about myself though.

I made the image above last night, in a fit of boredom for lack of photographic subjects. A candle perched atop my old tripod, a black cloth backdrop, and a major obstruction in the hallway (me). The sparks are from lighter flint.

How did you do it? Did you just lay the flint on the flame?

The trick is to turn the wheel on the lighter slowly, so it grinds some flint without igniting it. You then give the lighter a couple shakes about 10" about the candle. It helps to take the metal guard off the front of the lighter. These were 2-4 second exposures.

I like the way you cut out stuff and put it in your journal (followed image link to your flickr acct). I used to to do that in my letters, in the days before email. Envelopes too. I had a reputation at the post office.

Yeah, I sent out a package one time covered in quotes in different colored inks. Then I wrapped it all in clear tape so it wouldn't get wet and bleed into incoherence.

This a seasonal thing?
I know it sounds stupid but try taking trips to the tanning salon. the UV rays help with depression in the winter. :)
