This is a game being developed by the creator of The Sims, Will Wright. It's called "Spore". It looks amazing... you start as a microscopic organism, and evolve your way up the food chain. Build your creature, add legs or fins or whatever, morph it's skeleton... the game figures out how it will move, eat, etc. What do you evolve into eventually? From a collection of cells, to a complex organism, to a tribe, to a civilization, to an interplanetary star hopper in a ufo, who can visit other solar systems, terraform planets, abduct people and start new colonies. It's multiplayer, so you get to interact with the organisms, animals, civilizations and planets of other players. If you thought Sims was a time eater, this could be much, much worse!

Tech Background articles... using procedural behaviors to let users create their own content and their own gameplay, without requiring an army of developers. Players create content for other players, but the interaction is asynchronous... meaning if I take my ufo and visit your planet, and decide to blow it up with my doomsday weapon, you don't lose all your work. You may never know I visited in your version of the game. The interaction is limited to encountering the content creations of other players: creatures, civilizations and planets created by others are imported into my game for me to encounter.

Wow. That's the first computer game I've heard of in ages that actually sounds worth buying.

Will Wright will be one of the keynote speakers I'll be watching at the Game Developer's Conference (GDC) in a few weeks. I really look forward to what he has to say about Spore. It has the markings of one of those innovative games that people will talk about and praise but will not be a top-selling hit in America.
