Yesterday I went with [livejournal.com profile] shirokarasu back to this place:

This snake showed up to threaten Shiro's ankles...

Shiro near one of lower falls in the series. This is adjacent to the abandoned house I photographed a while back.

You can't tell it in the pic, but the difference in elevation between my foot and where the water exits the frame at the top is a good 15'.

I just liked this one.

At one of the top falls, there was a group gathered to watch some kids jumping off the rocks into the pool below. We picked up a groupie or two, but I was feeling shy and mostly hid over the edge of cliffs and took photos of waterfalls while Shiro talked to them. I'm weird, I know. He has pics of them in his post here (and some good shots of his own, too).

I also picked up a small digital camcorder (the kind that writes to flash memory). It had just the right balance of features, ease of use (download mpeg4 compressed movies right off the cam, it shows up as a hard drive when you plug it in), and price I was looking for. I suspect it will come in very handy. I'll post some movies if I make anything worth posting. :)

You're lucky to live in such a beautiful place (and have the talent to capture it) :)

the one with my foot is 1/10 sec, the bottom one is 1/2 sec, both handheld. The top one is 1sec, on a tripod.

OK, I've been on an animal-identification kick...hold on...

Yep, 'tis most likely what I thought...Eatern Garter Snake. I pick those up (yeah, I handle known non-venomous ones) all the time around here. Some are less noticeably speckled than others, but they all have those "racing stripes." :-)

im totally baffled.
do you guys use neutral density filters or what?
ive tried everything to have my waterfall photos turn out like this and the slightest bit of light turns them overexposed.
ive tried every exposure and ive used a nd filter.. shit ive even used a cp filter with it! hahah.

help meeee.
i love them.

Out of this batch, I really only like the bottom one, photographically speaking. But they tell the story, so are useful in that regard.

I mean, like the first one, but I have a better version.

With digital the whole trick is not blowing out the highs. :) I choose the whitest part of the water, use that to set my exposure, then recompose and shoot. Use a small aperture so you can get longer exposure times.

This is in a fairly steep ravine, so the incoming light is limited. That helps.
