So our second router conked out, just 3 weeks after the demise of the first one. Annoying. I'm now typing to you via router three... a new wireless unit. I also bought a UPS this time... thinking maybe power spikes/sags are the culprit. We shall see. Regardless, it's almost 3am now, and I'm going to bed. Toodles.

Hmmm. I don't have much exposure to dlink.
Not being very hackable tends to work out that way.

I haven't personally, had any problems with Linksys yet, except for one DOA. Oh, and the little matter of the factory firmware not fitting my needs, but that is easily remedied with OpenWrt. Well, for hardware revisions less than 5, apparently.

I may have opened a can of worms with this router.

I'll have to check what hardware version I have.

Ooh. I didn't know about the performance problems. I guess that's what happens when you skimp on RAM. The thing has no swap, so the only thing it can do is wait until a buffer becomes available. Well, that, or crash, which they say it doesn't do.

Consensus seemed to be that Cisco bought Linksys to dismantle a competitor. They didn't want people buying $50 routers to do what their $600 routers could be doing. Such moves are not surprising in that light. But if they only wanted to kill it, they could've done that by now. Design "improvements" such as the one mentioned in the article followed the acquisition. Either they are putting on a happy face for someone, or they really don't know what they're doing.

If you have a 54G, here is a table to help you figure out the version from the serial number. Here is the same thing if you have a 54GS.
