In economically depressed areas, the rape of the land is a big moneymaker, and private citizens can't find the monetary resources to buy it to protect it.
The line that got me from that article was this astounding pile of BS:
“This would stop the destructive logging operations,” the petition said. “With impending needs, such as jail improvements, school expansions, an animal shelter, courthouse improvements, (the) Election Commission building and other needs, this development would certainly provide much-needed funding to insure these projects proceed.”
Oh yes.... stop the destructive logging by developing the land! After all.... no forest = no logging! Right! Right!!!! See.... it's all good!!!
Bahhh!
If it should come to pass, I hope that they manage to retain at least some of it for public use. There is so little nature left around most urban areas that it is a shame to see any more of it disappear.
I think what bothers me most is "we have to increase the taxbase", as if that justifies any action they can get paid for. They argue against letting it become protected government land, because that would reduce tax revenues.
That building right there is now why they have the "ridge Laws" in NC. The Citadel of the SKiSlopes was a disaster.(and my ex used to work on the place a lot- it was truly horrible- and getting up and down thier roads!!!!

Of course, they're building up another area and calling it 'Mason's Ridge' with Craftsman style 'cotteges'.
