At least *I* never knew it existed.

What you're looking at is ten 2-foot-diameter circular saw blades driven by a snowmobile engine. They fly this thing along power lines, to trim the trees, particularly in rugged terrain. There is one flying up and down the ridge behind my parent's house right now.

Here's one in action... just hit pause and let it load so you can jump to the 3-minute mark. It's boring before that. Note how close he gets to the ground with it. Just thinking... I used to ride my dirt bike under the powerlines and in the woods nearby all the time. Matter of time until one of these turns somebody into sliced deli ham.

I read a couple patent summaries for these things... the version I want to see is the one that uses two *15 foot circular blades*... like something straight out of Terminator.

damn... that seems like an inefficent and sloppy way to cut trees

Consider steep rocky terrain, and the cost of getting trucks or crews into those areas. I can see why they invented it, but it still blows my mind.

Ah, the terrain - I did not think of that. I guess so...

...and dangerous. I agree.

That copter saw looks so dangerous - imagine a sudden gust of wind - trimmed powerlines and mangled chopper, anyone? Here we do that from the ground with cherrypickers.

I think they should use it in residential neighborhoods

keep the locals on their toes. assuming they can keep their toes.
