ISO 1600, low light, full zoom, handheld, so it's grainy and not so clear. Anyone care to back up my identification of it as a peregrine?

I going to say no it is not a peregrine falcon, cause one the tail is to long and it is not native to this area. It looks like a cooper hawk they have about the same markings as a peregrine and a longer tail.

Sorry, the wings are too rounded for a Peregrine, or any falcon. Comparing with [livejournal.com profile] thefile's picture, for example, even with the primary feathers fanned out, the leading edge ones would be longer.

In the UK, that would be what we'd call a hawk - probably a Goshawk. US bird nomenclature is a little different, but Cooper's Hawk looks about right.

Lovely photo, anyway

Ah, but there has been an effort to introduce (re-introduce?) the peregrine to the area around grandfather mtn... they had a sign saying as much in the visitor center.

After looking at a lot of photos I see what you mean about the wing shape. Guess I didn't find one.

Looks like I have a reason to go back. :)

well Ok I did not know that I read it out of my book, but I still say the tail is to long for it to be peregrine. A cooper and sharp shine hawks has the same marking and look alot like a falcon
