I going to say no it is not a peregrine falcon, cause one the tail is to long and it is not native to this area. It looks like a cooper hawk they have about the same markings as a peregrine and a longer tail.
Ah, but there has been an effort to introduce (re-introduce?) the peregrine to the area around grandfather mtn... they had a sign saying as much in the visitor center.
well Ok I did not know that I read it out of my book, but I still say the tail is to long for it to be peregrine. A cooper and sharp shine hawks has the same marking and look alot like a falcon
Sorry, the wings are too rounded for a Peregrine, or any falcon. Comparing with thefile's picture, for example, even with the primary feathers fanned out, the leading edge ones would be longer.
In the UK, that would be what we'd call a hawk - probably a Goshawk. US bird nomenclature is a little different, but Cooper's Hawk looks about right.
