I may not know a lot about carpentry, but I'm pretty sure that when you put down new plywood for flooring, you're not supposed to put it ON TOP OF THE OLD CARPET PADDING!!!

I have heard of this before... its done for a kind of extra insulation. Not sure its wise but seems effective.

I'm thinking the padding would be an EXCELLENT place for mold to grow and prosper, to say nothing of a wide assortment of insects.
