A trip to Rock Creek Falls
Aug. 31st, 2008 10:07 pmLorelei and I went to Rock Creek Falls today. Man, that was one UPHILL trek. But, a fine reward when we finally reached the falls. And about two minutes past this fall is another, but I didn't get any photos of that one.
1. One shot from way back, to show scale

2. Mmmmmmoss

3.

4. The nice thing about Lorelei bringing her camera is I can sneak pics of her concentrating and looking intent

5. Look at that ear gauge!

6. I was ecstatic when I spotted this mushroom, looking so colorful and with awesome lighting to boot

7. My STOOPID, STOOPID gps unit, which half the time doesn't know where it is. It's constantly complaining it doesn't have a clear view of the sky, and refusing to P on the G. Uh, sorry, there are these things called TREES outside. When it doesn't know, it tells me I'm in Texas, somewhere north of Lubbock, and offers to guide me to the waterfall I am seeking, over 1000 miles away.

8. Lorelei cooling off in the spray

9. ... and once cooled off, starts spinning and dancing around in the water

10.

11.

12. Soaked!

13.

14. I don't know if you can see it well, but the rock has been scooped and smoothed by the water until it looks like you took a melon baller or ice cream scoop to it in spots.

Rock Creek Falls
Travel north on Main Avenue 1.2 miles, turn right on to highway 395 following the signs to Rock Creek Recreation Area, 3.0 miles. Turn left into the area ($2.00 daily fee). Park at the bath house and continue walking down the paved road beyond camping loop C to the trailhead. The trail generally follows Rock Creek upstream. After a short distance you will arrive at a footbridge on your left. Do not cross the bridge. Continue on the main trail past the iron gate. You will cross the creek on rocks and logs four times before arriving at the lower falls. You must descend steeply along a narrow trail to reach the base of the falls. Upper Rock Creek Falls is a short distance further on the main trail. Both falls are approximately 40 ft. in height. During the winter the bluffs are often covered with large icicles. This is a moderate hike over a very rocky trail. Round trip distance is approximately 4 miles.
