So... anybody want to buy a Canon 5d?
Feb. 22nd, 2009 04:13 pmI just put mine up on Craigslist.
http://tricities.craigslist.org/pho/1042288524.html
And now, a new feature, from our "We can help you justify ANYTHING" department:
Logic says: I'd like to buy it, but I already have one.
Justification: Yes, but with two, you can use them as bookends, shoot double-handed and make stereographs, or add the perfect accessory to your "two of every lens" collection. Or, more seriously, if you are a wedding photographer, you should have a backup.
Logic says: I don't have the money.
Justification: This is what credit cards are for! Normally this would seem unwise, but the new stimulus package sets aside 669 million dollars to reimburse photographers for equipment purchases, so you should be getting a wad of cash in the mail any time now. http://appropriations.house.gov/pdf/Recovery_Bill_Div_A.pdf http://appropriations.house.gov/pdf/Recovery_Bill_Div_B.pdf I'm pretty sure I read it in there somewhere.
Logic says: My significant other would kill me.
Justification: No he/she won't, just buy them a toy THEY want. A preemptive gesture is especially effective at garnering their acceptance of this purchase, needed to further your art. They don't want to crush your artistic ambitions, do they? Of course not. And my he/she looks dashing in that new wetsuit / new bracelet / new helmet / etc.
Logic says: I have all Nikon equipment.
Justification: Then wow, what an opportunity this is for you to get a fresh start!
Logic says: See, I have this thing about food AND shelter...
Justification: When was the last time a happy comfortable life made for excellent journalism? Document your travails and your slide into the dark underbelly of society, then publish a book. Never has there been a more direct route to wealth than by spending money on this camera.

on 2009-02-23 04:48 pm (UTC)I checked a couple out at a couple of camera stores. There is just something that comes over me when I handle a fine instrument. It was love at first click.
I wound up upgrading my home computer system instead.
The Reasoning.
The work I am doing now with the Digital Rebel is just fine. I have not hit any real technical barrier.
My skill level is appropriate to the Digital Rebel.
Major consideration: When I bought the digital rebel it cost about as much as the 50D. I think the Cameras are equivalent. I do not like the new digital rebel.
The deciding point. I have reached a point now, since there are so many miles in the digital rebel, that I am comfortable going pretty much everywhere with it. I would be reticent with the upgrade that was still being paid off, assuming I did not save up for it. I had the 1500 in the bank last time.
We will see what I get back in this year's taxes.
Love the 5D It is way too much camera for my skill level.
SLR Camera help
on 2009-03-03 03:23 am (UTC)I am the sweetie of chiefted and he said that you might be able to help me.
I am a newbie at SLR camera's and I am looking to buy my first one.
I have little to no experience with them (just borrowing my bosses for a few hours), but
fell in love with it.
I am a "budget" of sorts, would like to stay around $500.00 but can be flexible for the right one that will last me years and years.
So if you have any advice on what you think someone like me could get I would be so happy.
You can read and read and read but knowing people with them that can give you their honest opinion on them really helps me out.
Re: SLR Camera help
on 2009-03-03 03:37 pm (UTC)I'll give you a couple sites I trust for reviews and buying recommendations:
Lens reviews: http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/
Camera reviews: http://steves-digicams.com
Retailer reviews: http://www.resellerratings.com/ Note: ALWAYS check this site before ordering from a retailer. Most other rating sites are scammable, this one doesn't seem to be. There are tons of bad retailers out there advertising super-cheap prices. You will get taken if you buy from them, period. Check here first!
Your price point is tough though, there isn't a whole lot in that price range. And since I'd advise sticking with Nikon or Canon, that limits your choices even more. Your best bet will be to have some patience and care and buy a good used camera. Lots of people are upgrading right now thanks to new product releases by both Canon and Nikon, which means they are selling their old equipment.
I'd look for one of these cameras used on Ebay, or better yet, on Craigslist so you can you can inspect it in person (bring along a photographer friend):
Canon 20d or Canon 30d
Nikon d70 or Nikon d80
Obviously, if you find an awesome deal on a newer model, go for it, but those seem to be going for close to your price range.
If you want to get into more specific recommendations about lenses and stuff, I'm going to be able to help you out more on Canon, since that is what I own.
And just let me get this out there... don't let anyone fill your head with crap about which brand is better, Canon or Nikon. They both make great cameras, they both have strengths and weaknesses. If you tell me more about what type shooting you plan to do, I can maybe recommend one brand over another, but really, you won't go wrong with either. In the end, it's not the camera, it's the photographer. You can do good work with any equipment, if you work within it's capabilities.
