Various projects

Been doing a lot but I keep forgetting to post abou tit. A lotof it hasn't been glamorous, just fixing misc small things that have been annoying me. But, I did have one photo worthy thing...
This took place over several weekends. I think I have a good thirty hours of sanding in this thing. I played with different designs and decided on this one, which will be easy to take apart and get through doors. There were supposed to be cross-braces on the back and sides, but it turns out I massively overengineered it, and it doesn't need them. I haven't finished the wood yet, but Lorelei was dying to use it, so I'll wait a while until she stays the weekend at my parents or something.

Today I did highly un-fun projects. I've got half the front of my house torn off, in preparation for replacing the termite eaten wood that was behind the brick planter. The damage went up a couple feet farther than I had expected, but it will be okay. It's just going to be difficult, and I'm not looking forward to some parts of it. Spent today removing siding, removing old fiberglass shingles and pulling off the outer wood (or what was left of it), and figuring out the plan. Going to have to replace the sill plate (a major bitch), sister-tie in some new 2x4's to reinforce the damaged studs (which are old rough-cut 2x4's that actually measure 2x4, not the 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 kind that is commonly sold, so that will be amusing too), put on new outer plywood, and put on new siding. Yeah, I'm thrilled. For what it's worth, a contractor has bought the house next door, and is reworking the interior so he can rent it. He came over to look at it, and said that a contractor would probably charge $10k-$20k to do the job. Knowing that won't make it any more fun, but it will make it less painful.
Also fixed the dryer duct today... found out it was one of those cheap plastic bendy ducts, and it was shredded as they tend to do. So, crawled around in the (what else) crawlspace amidst the fiberglass and dryer lint and general dust of ages, put in new metal ducting, got it fastened down mad tight.

on 2003-11-22 05:29 pm (UTC)Sounds like your other projects weren't so fun tho... but necessary. Saving a lot doing it yourself tho, instead of contracting it out.
Have fun! :)
