We did the same thing to that closet in the downstairs hallway. It had gotten bad enough that things fell out everytime you opened the door and I had warned Maya against trying to do so. We put up pegboard. And a 32-drawer organizer, mounted to the wall. I sat in the dining room floor, sorting nails from screws and other small things. It was great. :)
Luckily, that closet doesn't hold anything except tools and other appropriate household stuff, like extension cords. There's a very high shelf at the back where we can safely store chemical stuff, too, like spray-on wallpaper remover and floor glue solvent. I want a garage sooooooooo bad!!
