a story I read in the newspaper yesterday. This guy robbed a bank while wearing a bomb strapped to a collar around his neck. He pulled off the robbery, but either could not disarm or forgot to disarm the bomb and ended up blowing himself up while driving away from the bank.

People are real morons sometimes.

actually that one may be sad. The guy claimed he was kidnapped and they strapped the bomb to him to make him do the robbery. I don't know if they have caught the people who may have done it or not.

Actually that is a very interesting story. I'm of the belief that the man was innocent, and was forced into the bank robbery. A retired FBI agent was quote as saying he believed it's about an 80% chance that he guy was just a pawn.

Think about it. It's one thing to strap a bomb to your chest and hold a button, saying you are going to blow yourself up. It's quite another to *lock* a *timed* bomb to yourself, and leave the keys at home. Why the hell would you do that?

From what I read though, this guy never even revealed he had the bomb until he was caught by the cops (it was hidden under his shirt), and then pleaded with the cops, "why isn't someone trying to get this off me" and "I don't have much time", saying someone had forced him to do it.

This type of "explosive collar" has been used before in South America and in Columbia. So anyway. Freaky.

Their story said that the guy was driving in his car when the bomb exploded. They didn't mention any of those other details, not even the FBI involvement.

I should subscribe to a different paper. :/

When I lived in Spain I remember a couple of economic terrorism cases in which businessmen were kidnapped, strapped a bomb to their chest and then released with instructions to bring some amount of money to a certain location within few days in order to deactivate the bomb. They also told them not to try to deactivate as it would explode.

In one of the cases the businessman did as instructed and he was set free from the bomb. In the other case, the police somehow intercepted the businessman, prevented him from giving money to the people who strapped the bomb, tried to deactivate it themselves, and sadly they didn't know what they were doing because it exploded and the man died.

This poor guy just missed getting his Darwin Award! I know I shouldn't laugh, but c'mon, I can't remember the last time anyone I hang with got an irresistable urge to put a firecracker anywhere near their anatomy at all, nevermind "down there." Get it? Down there. Down under. Must be why this happened in Australia, right?

Actually, I think with the Darwin awards you have to take yourself out of the gene pool. In that case, he qualifies (and gets my nomination).
