When I lived in Spain I remember a couple of economic terrorism cases in which businessmen were kidnapped, strapped a bomb to their chest and then released with instructions to bring some amount of money to a certain location within few days in order to deactivate the bomb. They also told them not to try to deactivate as it would explode.

In one of the cases the businessman did as instructed and he was set free from the bomb. In the other case, the police somehow intercepted the businessman, prevented him from giving money to the people who strapped the bomb, tried to deactivate it themselves, and sadly they didn't know what they were doing because it exploded and the man died.
